Introducing...Lucky Boy Gareth’s whole life has been defined by a relationship he had 35 years ago when, as a 14-year-old schoolboy, he fell in love with an attractive young teacher at his school. He spent most afternoons in her bedroom and thought he was the luckiest boy in the world. But when she walked out of his life everything started to unravel. Lucky Boy is a new four-part series in which Chloe Hadjimatheou asks who gets to be a perpetrator and a victim. Episodes 1 and 2 are available to listen now. Well Done

Brilliant storytelling. My heart breaks for the victim. Many people failed him that should have intervened. He is brave for standing up to Ms. Bowen after a lifetime of grief and confusion around his experience. Despite her denials, I believe him.
Consent
4月29日
Lucky Boy: gave it a charitable listen. Liked 50% of it but the compassion of the narrator for Gareth is contradicted by the terms she uses. At one point in Ep 3, the narrator calls him Bowen’s “15 year-old lover.” Gross. Also, it’s not sex, it’s statutory rape of a minor. Even *with* consent. The narrator problematizes the consent by talking about Garett not understanding his desires and being taken advantage of. A good amount of time is spent on how it traumatized him, while simultaneously not calling it rape. If it were a 15 year-old girl and a teacher, she would not be called a lover.
Personal responsibility

I’m having a very hard time with the Master story. It quite seems to me that none of these women want to take personal responsibility for their decisions and actions. I realize there was a power imbalance, but there are power imbalances every day between gender, race, socioeconomic, divides, etc. Many of these women admitted that they did want something out of the relationship and did get something out of the relationship. Now it appears as though they all want money. Would they be pursuing this so hard if they were not getting a cent???
Terribly sad, excellently reported

Some of the best reporting I have heard. Such an important yet sad story. Thank you to everyone for your openness in getting this story out.
