In these bonus episodes of my podcast, we bring you all of the most relevant sections from the podcast on a given theme. This month, we’re taking the best from Diary of a CEO on the theme of MOTIVATION.
The first clip is from author and former presidential speechwriter Daniel Pink, the author of Drive, the book that changed the game in thinking about motivation. Daniel tells us what he learnt in studying drive, and the limits of boiling it down to a carrot and a stick. Rather, he’ll explain how we are naturally motivated by projects we’re passionate about and which align with our values.
Sir David Brailsford is the former performance director of Team GB Cycling and is currently general manager of INEOS. He tells us all about how giving people ownership of their own project, autonomy and ambitious goals go together so every participant is having to think on their feet, innovate and work hard. To motivate someone the role has to require them to really work, not just follow instructions.
Rangan Chaterjee is a doctor who tells us all about how we can find motivation by harnessing our “motivation curve”, by tacking new habits onto existing ones (like breathwork onto our morning coffee) we’re working with the grain of our body and mental psychology, not against it.
Three different sources of motivation, three different reasons to feel motivated today, three inspirational teachers who found motivation in their own lives for the most daunting tasks in the world. Writing a book, the olympics, and high-stakes medical work. We can all find a bit of motivation in that.
