Kaitlyn Braun, a pregnant young woman in crisis, takes dozens of birth workers through an escalating series of disasters – rape, baby loss, and even a coma. One by one, the doulas struggle to support her and grieve with her, and even save her life as they’re led down a distressing path. And then the truth comes out. In this six-part true crime series, Sarah Treleaven untangles a complex web of lies and deception to ask who Kaitlyn really is and why she did the things that she did. Cases like these puzzle legal experts and raise intricate moral and ethical questions. This is not your average con. Kaitlyn is not your usual scammer. Kaitlyn's Baby is Season 2 of The Con — a podcast exposing the art of deception — from CBC and the BBC World Service. Season 1 - the critically acclaimed catfishing quest, Love, Janessa, launched in January 2023. Content warning: The latest season of The Con contains references to medical emergencies, including baby loss. We also deal with sexual assault and there is some strong language.

Well done!

The subject matter was very intriguing and there were a lot of twists and turns. A great mix of investigation and interviews, and was quite well made.
Oh come on!

Kaitlyn picked Doulas for a good reason. A midwife wouldn’t have believed her within the first 10 mins. A primip and 40 hours labouring at home, alone, no discussion of who has been doing her antenatal care? Are they aware she’s in labour? When was the Fetal death diagnosed? What was the discussion of spontaneous labour Vs induction? This is the problem with doulas. They have their place but this one is out of her depth right from the word go. If this was real, it would have been irresponsible to continue without so much more information. I’m surprised an experienced Doula didn’t seek more information and support.
Fascinating but unsatisfying

This is a fascinating case of with echoes of others explored in podcasts such as ‘Scamanda’, ‘Believe in Magic’ and ‘Finding Samantha’. Disappointed that there didn’t seem to be a deeper exploration of the systems /circumstances that enabled Kaitlyn to scam so many (eg lack of regulation and absence of professional associations, COVID lockdowns leading to phone-based support, etc). Nor was there any discussion of what steps the doulas took (if any) to protect themselves and maintain professional boundaries for future clients, eg intake processes, getting information about a clients existing supports, safety planning in case of situations out of scope, etc.
Interesting
